Deduction under Section 80D: how it works and FAQs

FY 2025-26 (Income-tax Act 1961) and FY 2026-27 (Income-tax Act 2025) · Updated

How it works

Section 80D lets you deduct health-insurance premium for yourself, your family and your parents (old regime).

Section 80D lets you deduct health-insurance premium for yourself, your family and your parents (old regime). Each group — self/family and parents — is capped at ₹25,000, or ₹50,000 if the insured is a senior citizen. Preventive health check-ups count up to ₹5,000 within those caps.

  1. Self / family group: premium capped at ₹25,000 (₹50,000 if senior); senior premium and very-senior medical expenditure up to ₹50,000; the group total is capped at ₹50,000.
  2. Parents group: the same caps, separately.
  3. Preventive health check-up counts up to ₹5,000, but only within the room left in the caps.
  4. Deduction = self group + parents group + check-ups (max ₹5,000). HUF gets one ₹50,000 bucket.

Worked example

Deduction under 80D = ₹53,000.

Own premium ₹20,000, senior parents’ premium ₹30,000, and a ₹3,000 check-up for yourself.

  1. Self group = ₹20,000; parents group = ₹30,000.
  2. Check-up ₹3,000 fits within your remaining room.

Deduction under 80D = ₹53,000.
